the desert has creepy bugs

We had our first encounter with scorpions today. I found this delightful little creature under my towel this evening as I got out of the shower.I loudly requested that Jonathan come quickly and was teased for the next half hour by those who thought I over reacted. The kids saw this as an opportunity to have a pet, and mulled over names such as Billy Bob, Yog, "Jorj" (George for those of you who don't know kidspell) Washington II and Shane. Ellie neatly compiled the names onto a list which she presented me with while our curiously little Jonny couldn't keep his hands off of "Shane's" new home, which resulted in him dropping it, us panicking and ultimately deciding that a scorpion was not an appropriate pet for 3 little kids. Fortunately, the kids were not too attached and were just as by fascinated watching Shane swirl down toilet (because all drains head to the ocean of course) as they were watching him crawl around in his jar. So no trauma. Well, very little anyway. I was somewhat traumatized despite the fact the fact that I had a pet one as a kid. Finding one under your towel is never a welcome sight.

  1. Gorgeous Layout of you blog! I'm kind of surprized that the scorpion freaked you out. That would never have happened when you were a kid. Do you know that I have never actually had one in my house or yard. Strange, huh? Love you, Mom

  2. That is sooo nasty!!! I hate bugs. I thought our earwig problem was bad, but those pinchers make the earwigs pinchers look not so bad. Oh well, the price you pay for warm weather!!

  3. Matt caught one in the wild and put it in fermaldihide and still has the little beaker with it in it. It still scares me and it's been dead over 2 years. Maybe we'll bring Matt down to start or add to his collection.

  4. EWW...I hate nasty bugs. Is there any way to spray for those things? I remember moving to Washington and having to get used to all of the ugly looking spiders that I had never seen before. We called the Orkin lady and I don't see very many anymore!

  5. YOU'RE NOT OVERREACTING! I'm sick about the scorpion and I'm all the way over here, safe in my home. I love this post. I've never seen your blog before. The background is beautiful. I'm going to consider this blog a fine educational tool- especially since it explained about "all water leading to the ocean."

  6. I don't think there is ever a time that pinchy-stingy things should be normal! In the colder months when I was working in the desert, I would often wake up in the morning with scorpions under my sleeping mat. I guess they thought I was a warm place to sleep--comforting to them, not so for me! Love you guys!
